By now the AddThis widget has become common place on the web. It is used widely and becoming more and more popular as social media continues to grow as a mainstream source of infromation sharing. We were asked to build a custom widget for a client who did not want to use the AddThis widget provided for free at addthis.com, because that widget gathers analytic information. So we set out and came up with our own widget that we are calling j-shareIt. The j stands for jquery which is the guts that make it work, and share it is pretty self explanatory.

We won't take all the credit, or even most as the acutal programming is from jquery. However, the event handler that makes the whole thing work was created by Mark S. Kolich. He deserves all the credit for actuall making it work. We took the code he came up with and slapped our own style and skin on it, and made it portable, and more important, easily downloadable here at our site. We made it more like the actual AddThis widget out there, and gave it the funcionality to fit anywhere on a site.

Give it a try! If you have accounts at any of the social media sharing sites that are listed when you place your cursor over ther button below, you can click on them, and be directed to said sites. If you are logged in already the forms for sharing the information will already be filled out with the title and url from my site page. If you aren't, when you login in the forms will still fill! It's pretty nifty, try it out at the top of this post.

Unlike the AddThis widget, you will have to put images, CSS and scripts where you want them on your server. Then you just have to add the actual widget coe where you want it on you site, and voila!
