Work Done in 2008-2009

Overstock.com: Homepage

Designed and coded between July-August 2009. I was hired at Overstock.com in September 2008, to help bring the email marketing team up to date on standards and principles. After re-vamping the email designs and code, I moved on to the website team and one of my first projects was the redesign and code of the homepage. During the process I also redesigned the header and footer across the site.

Used a super clean and sleek Swiss-style to force users to concentrate on the products/content and not the design.

Designed in Adobe CS3; coded using HTML, CSS, Javascrpt & Ajax. Introduced the company to the jQuery library, utlizing jCarousel, cycle, tabs, ajax-load, and show/hide as well as slide and fade functions. http://www.overstock.com

Overstock.com Graphics - click thumbnails to launch lightbox

Designed between August-November 2009 using Adobe CS3. During my tenure at Overstock.com I have had various roles, ranging from Email Developer, to Web Designer, to Front End Developer. During the fall of 2009 I was in charge of all design for the homepage and header. This included advertising, banners, messaging and promotional logos. Above are a few examples of the 100's of pieces of creative I turned out before taking a more administrative position as a Senior Front End Developer and Team Lead.

Overstock.com 2009 Holiday Header

Designed and coded in December 2009. For the Holiday season the Overstock.com executive team wanted to add a holiday feeling across the website, using the header. A work-order was placed to the graphics department and out of 22 designs submitted, the executives chose to use my design to represent the website through the month of December.

For the backgorund I started with a stock image of a snowman. After redrawing the snowman, I added rolling hills, and snow-covered pine trees. Lastly, I added a blizzard to the scene, creating an image that represented not neccesarily any particular holiday, but the entire season.

I took the code from the header and created two-layered background images to fill the space behind the logo and searchbar. The header was live on site for 13 days between December 12-25.

Overstock.com: About Overstock

Designed and coded in October 2009. After redesigning the footer, I took all the information that was previously held in the footer, and compacted it into one link that brings users to this page with tabs, inside of tabs. The interface compiled pages of information into one, single-flowing piece.

Designed in Adobe CS3; coded using HTML, CSS, Javascrpt & Ajax. jQuery tabs were used to house the information, while ajax-load was used to call portions of the information from other locations. http://www.overstock.com/about

Overstock.com: Twitter Wallpaper

Designed in August 2009. The guys in the Overstock.com Social Networking department grabbed me one day and asked if I could throw together a wallpaper representative of Utah (where Overstock is headquartered) to use as their Twitter background. I drafted up an outdoors scene with mountains, snowcaps, pine trees, and, of course a few birds using Overstock.com Red.

Every Mutt Matters

Designed and Coded in December 2009. Every Mutt Matters was a charitable project I did as a gift to my girlfriend. She has been working the past year on creating a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting no-kill, animal shelters. To help her, I came up with this website, which launched on Christmas Day in 2009.

For the design I used a range of pinks that were based off a logo I had designed earlier. The grid layout used a mix of swiss style with a modern touch. The clean and warm design should help users feel comfortable when browsing the site.

Designed in Adobe CS3; coded using PHP, HTML, CSS, Javascrpt & Ajax. Integrated a number of Blogger feeds, as well as a Coppermine PHP Photo Gallery w/cpmfetch. Using jQuery, I added jCarousel, Cycle, Colorbox, Juitter, and jQuery Form Validation. http://www.everymuttmatters.org

Tim Avery Birding

Designed and Coded in June 2009. This is my personal website, mostly used for hosting photos of birds and other wildlife taken over the years. Receiving between 1,000 - 3,000 unique visitors and 10,000 page loads each month the site is recognized as a leading example of a personal birding and photography website.

The simple, white-space friendly design, with very light 3-D touches keeps the user focused on the content.

Designed in Adobe CS3; coded using PHP, HTML, CSS, Javascrpt & Ajax. Integrated a Blogger feed, as well as a Coppermine PHP Photo Gallery w/cpmfetch. Several jQuery plugins are in use. Using symantic coding practices, I have managed to push the site into the top 10 on Google for searches like "Utah Birds", and "Utah Birding", and for the past several months have held the number 1 position for "Utah Bird Photography" http://www.timaverybirding.com

Citizen Blues

Designed and Coded between December 2008 - January 2009. Working with a Ruby/PHP developer, I designed and coded the front end of this very unique ODAT (one deal at a time). Citizen Blues sells closeout, brand name jeans at huge discounts. The front end was modeled after a number of ecommerce sites, pulling in the most useful information in a meaningful layout to keep the user focused on the deal. A large product image is the focus of the page.

The colors used were a palette of blues based off, what else, but blue jeans. A clean but stylish interface was used, to connect with the "Apple" era users the owners hoped to reach.

Wasatch Ski Valet

Updated Design and Code December 2009. This project was started by another developer, but left unfinished. I picked up the project, finishing the interface and adding new functionality. Hopefully, in 2010, I will be able to work with the owner and redesign the entire site to a larger, more sleek interface.

Designed in Adobe CS3, coded using HTML, CSS, and Javascript. Several jQuery plugins are also in place. http://www.wasatchskivalet.com

Utah Linking Communities

Designed and Coded between March and April 2009. This project is not yet finished, but was created for a non-profit organization. They needed to be able to update the information on site as needed, so a CMS was integrated for admin pruposes. As with most of my designs, a sleek, simple, swiss-style was used with a light color palette based the Linking Communities Logo.

Designed in Adobe CS3; coded using PHP, HTML, CSS, Javascrpt & Ajax. Integrated a number of Blogger feeds, as well as, a Coppermine PHP Photo Gallery w/cpmfetch. Several jQuery plugins are also in place http://www.utahlinking.org

Aerial Perspective

Never Quite Finished and Always Changing. This is my personal design blog, which, for the most part, goes unused. From time to time I update the layout and try to add some functionality, but for the most part it is there for me to play with when I am bored.

Currently, I am using it to host this portfolio, and test out a few ideas for other sites. Eventually, I will hopefully use it to blog more about design and showcase my current projects.

Mountain West Birding Company

Designed and Coded in June 2008. In the summer of 2008 the American Birding Association hosted its annual convention at Snowbird, Utah and I was hired as a tour leader during the convention. I decided I needed to create a site to gather clientele on the side during the convention for personal guiding. I managed to add six or seven clients during the convention week, proving the site was worth the build. Since then it has not been used very much and has not been updated in some time.

This is one of my last "rounded" edge sites, following the Web2.0 boom. It has quite a bit of glossy components, and a bright orange-red color base, complemented by a set of dark grays, black and white. This is not the style I currently design with, but is still a nice example of a shiny "Apple"-esque site.
